French President Emmanuel Macron is set to embark on a two-day state visit to Spain from September 29 to 30, as announced by the Spanish government. This visit marks Macron’s first official trip to Spain since January 2023 and notably the first state visit by a French president to the country since 2009.
During his visit, President Macron will engage in discussions with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. The agenda is expected to focus on enhancing bilateral cooperation and tackling significant challenges facing Europe today, such as the protection of democracy, the influence of social media, and the impact of artificial intelligence.
A significant part of the visit includes a state banquet hosted by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, underscoring the importance of diplomatic relations between the two nations. The leaders are also anticipated to delve into discussions on pressing international issues, particularly the ongoing war in Ukraine and the evolving situation in the Middle East.
Previously, Macron and Sanchez had signed a friendship treaty during the French president’s visit in January 2023. However, the treaty has yet to be ratified by the Spanish government due to opposition from right-wing political factions.
