Brussels Airlines is set to implement a new fare structure that will eliminate free overhead cabin baggage for passengers purchasing the lowest-priced tickets on their short and medium-haul routes. Currently, the Economy Light fare allows travelers to bring both a personal item and a standard cabin bag. However, under the new entry-level fare termed Economy Basic, only a small personal item that can fit under the seat—like a handbag, laptop bag, or small backpack—will be included.
Travelers who wish to carry a larger cabin suitcase will have to opt for a higher fare category or incur an additional baggage fee. The airline plans to test this new fare structure starting April 28 for flights departing from May 19 on selected routes. If the trial proves successful, there are plans to extend this fare model across Brussels Airlines’ European network.
This initiative is part of a larger strategy by the Lufthansa Group, which encompasses Brussels Airlines as well as Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Discover Airlines, Lufthansa City Airlines, and Air Dolomiti. The airlines argue that the change offers greater flexibility and enables passengers traveling with minimal luggage to benefit from lower fares. However, for travelers who frequently carry cabin luggage, the total cost might not significantly differ once the baggage fees are accounted for.
The adjustment is anticipated to significantly affect business travelers, frequent flyers, expatriates, and families who often depend on cabin baggage to avoid the costs and delays associated with checked luggage. Passengers are being encouraged to thoroughly examine fare conditions prior to booking and to evaluate the complete travel cost, including potential baggage fees, rather than solely considering the advertised ticket price.
For those traveling with only a personal item, the new fare could represent potential savings. Nevertheless, for many others, the lowest-priced ticket might not equate to the lowest overall travel cost once additional fees are factored in.
