Russia has intensified its offensive against Ukraine’s railway infrastructure, resulting in the deaths of six railway workers in a series of missile strikes. These attacks form part of Moscow’s ongoing efforts to target Kyiv and critical infrastructure nationwide. The Ukrainian state railway operator reported that the workers were killed when a ballistic missile struck a locomotive depot. Additional railway facilities sustained damage during a widespread assault on Kyiv and its surrounding areas. The broader bombardment claimed at least 12 lives, including children, and left several others injured.
This surge in attacks represents an escalation in Russia’s campaign targeting Ukraine’s railway system, a crucial component that has remained operational throughout the conflict, facilitating the transport of civilians, supplies, and military equipment. The railway network continues to serve as a vital logistical lifeline for the country. According to Ukraine’s railway authorities, since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion, 58 railway employees have lost their lives, and over 300 have been injured. The network itself has suffered significant damage, with hundreds of locomotives and carriages affected.
The frequency of Russian attacks on railway infrastructure has sharply increased this year. Ukrainian officials note that the railway network has been targeted more than 1,500 times, already surpassing the total number of attacks recorded during the previous year. These assaults have evolved from targeting bridges and railway tracks to direct strikes on locomotives, depots, and electrical infrastructure. Ukrainian officials highlight the increased use of drones and missiles by Russia, complicating efforts to protect these facilities due to Ukraine’s shortages of air-defense systems.
Passenger services have also experienced growing disruptions as a result of these strikes. Trains, once known for their punctuality, now face regular delays as passengers and railway workers take shelter during air-raid alerts. Some delays have extended for hours. The Ukrainian railway system, spanning approximately 24,000 kilometers, remains essential for the country’s economy and wartime logistics. Continued attacks could further impact industrial activity, exports, and the movement of people and goods, officials warn.
As Russia’s drone strikes escalate, with over 1,500 drones launched in recent attacks, including newer jet-powered models that are harder to intercept, Ukraine is urging its Western allies to supply additional air-defense systems to safeguard its railway infrastructure. Amid these frequent attacks, Ukraine faces increasing pressure to protect its railway network, which is vital to both the civilian population and the nation’s military efforts.
