The European Commission has sanctioned a €170 million state aid package to assist Bulgarian farmers grappling with escalating fuel and fertiliser costs due to the ongoing Middle East crisis. This financial aid will be dispensed through direct grants aimed at mitigating the impact of surging input costs on agricultural producers.
Under the approved scheme, individual companies are eligible to receive up to €50,000. The aid must be allocated by the deadline of December 31, 2026. This initiative represents an effort to shield Bulgarian agriculture from the financial strains exacerbated by international developments.
This latest financial support follows a similar aid scheme sanctioned in 2024, when approximately €169 million was designated to aid Bulgarian farmers. That package was intended to alleviate the effects of increased energy costs and the broader economic repercussions of the war in Ukraine.
The European Commission’s decision underscores the ongoing challenges faced by farmers in Bulgaria, who are contending with fluctuations in global market conditions that directly affect their operational costs. This assistance package is a critical measure to ensure stability and sustainability within the agricultural sector as external pressures continue to mount.
