This summer, Europe has experienced a series of severe heatwaves, resulting in at least 35,000 excess deaths. As more countries finalize their assessments, the actual number is expected to be considerably higher. Germany, France, and Spain have reported a combined total of over 25,000 estimated excess deaths due to the extreme heat. Notably, Germany has documented approximately 14,000 heat-related fatalities from April to early August, marking this summer as the deadliest for heat in its history. Spain has also faced a record number of heat-related deaths, with nearly 5,000 reported since May.
France has recorded around 7,300 excess deaths from late May through July. However, this preliminary figure does not include data from August, suggesting the final count could increase. Other European nations, including the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland, have observed significant rises in mortality rates amidst the intense heat conditions. The persistent heatwaves have pushed temperatures beyond 40°C across much of western and central Europe, setting numerous records at both national and local levels.
Scientists attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of such extreme heat events to climate change. The challenge in identifying heat-related deaths lies in how extreme temperatures exacerbate existing health issues, such as cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, rather than being directly recorded as the cause of death.
As delayed mortality data continues to be processed and figures from August become available, experts anticipate a rise in the overall death toll throughout Europe. This situation underscores the escalating public health risks associated with more frequent and severe heatwaves. The ongoing assessments and updates in mortality figures are crucial for understanding the full impact of the recent extreme heat on European populations.
